  Facet Osteophytes

The facet joints are true synovial joints about the size of a knuckle. They become malaligned with vertical translation or shifting of the disc (movement represented by the red arrow) during collapse and degenerative change can result in spur formation (spur represented by the white arrow). The consequence of this degenerative change can be severe causing either local symptoms from arthritic mechanism or a nerve root compression.
